One of the first American Jesuits to come to Santa Clara, Edmund J. Young arrived in 1861 and remained the rest of his life. He taught rhetoric and directed the school's literary activity for 30 years. He was a favorite teacher.
The 130-bed senior dormitory was located on the first floor of the Ship. The term "senior" refers to the collegiate students who lived there as opposed to the high school students who slept elsewhere.
