Alum Rock House provided lodging to visitors to Alum Rock Park in the 1870s and 1880s. It stood on the south side of the canyon opposite the main bridge across Penitencia Creek. It burned down in 1890.

Big tourist attraction at Alum Rock Park. Touted as a meteor but may have been a natural occurrence. Broken up in 1918 to help with the war effort. Smelting yielded 39 tons of high grade magnanese ore used in the manufacture of armor plating.

Alum Rock stands at the entrance to Alum Rock Park. It is the hardened core of an extinct volcano with a high percentage of alum which gave the park its name.

The Sainte Claire Club was an exclusive men's club founded in San Jose in 1888. The Mission Style Revial Clubhouse was built at the corner of North Second and Saint James in 1893. Both the building and the Club still survive.
