These pages are an excerpt from the extensive file of Fr. Francisco García Diego's canonical process, the Franciscan missionary who had served at Mission Santa Clara. They include the 1839 letter by Mexico´s Apostolic Delegate announcing the government´s decision to request to the Holy See the creation of an independent diocese of California and the appointment of Fr. García Diego as its first bishop. This document also includes the testimonies from various individuals about Fr. García Diego´s personal and clerical life, but also about the geography, demography, and society of California in order to inform Rome about this remote territory. This file includes a 1787 map of California portraying Mission Santa Clara and the other missions.
