This collection, taken from books and pamphlets in the Santa Clara University Archives & Special Collections Department,
features histories of Santa Clara College and University, and the Santa Clara de Asis Mission, from its founding days
until the bicentennial mission celebration of 1977. It also includes tour pamphlets for the Mission.

The 1896 Souvenir of Santa Clara College is a fascinating, candid, in-depth commentary
on the objectives of the College. Full of interesting facts about admissions, student expenses,
campus culture, Jesuit philosophy, academic programs, and fascinating photographs,
the Souvenir is an intimate introduction of the reader to the College and inherently invokes

The 1896 Souvenir - Golden Jubilee - Santa Clara College commemorates the 50th anniversary
of the establishment of Santa Clara College. The first half of the Souvenir details the notable
figures and the correspondences among them which played integral roles in the development
of the College into an elite institution. An outline of the Golden Jubilee celebration in 1901
is also provided. Interestingly, in the second half of the Souvenir, the script to the play entitled
Nazareth” – A History of the Faith by Clay M. Greene is provided, which is divided into 4 epochs
and 10 chapters. The play is a celebration of biblical tradition and its relevance to the College’s objective.

University of Santa Clara; A History
is a publication from 1912 primarily focused on capturing the progression
of the University as it transitioned from being a college to becoming inaugurated as a University. This publication
provides an intimate synopsis of the inception of the institution and recognizes all the University’s leaders,
including past presidents and faculty, as well as the alumni of the University. Additionally, detailed images

Published in 1926, the University of Santa Clara Diamond Jubilee Volume 1851 – 1926 recognizes the transition
of both the University and the State of California from the category of jubilee-observing institutions (60 or more years
since establishment) to the category of centenary-observing institutions (100 or more years since establishment).
In this commemorative piece, a brief overview of the history of the University since its inauguration in 1912 is given,
including notable contextual events such as the First World War. Additionally, a description of the origins and establishment

Mission Santa Clara de Asis
is a small pamphlet tailored to visitors of the Mission looking to learn the background of the Mission.
The pamphlet details the establishment of the Mission and provides further  reading sources for additional resources.

On January 12, 1977, the Mission Santa Clara community gathered in celebration of the 200th year since
the inception of the mission on January 12, 1777. The Bicentennial Celebration - Mission Santa Clara
program includes a reverent yet brief overview of the establishment of the Mission and outlines
the various events put together to commemorate the establishment of the Mission. These events
included the Bicentennial Mass, a Luncheon, and an Inauguration Ceremony.

The 2002 Historical Tour of Mission Santa Clara de Asis provides a guided historical tour of the Mission.
While recognizing points of interest, the guidebook provides a historical background of each to help
contextualize the aspects of the Mission, which consequently produces a sense of historical nostalgia within
the reader. The guidebook also provides further reading sources as well as a detailed fold-out map of
the Santa Clara University campus.
